Which Method of Contraception is Right for You?

Deciding which method of contraception is right for you and your partner can be a process. There are so many different options, and they each have their own pros and cons.

Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills are a very popular method of contraception for many women. Advantages of birth control pills are that they are extremely effective, they can help regulate or even decrease menstrual cycles, and they can help with acne and having clearer skin. On the negative side, they can sometimes affect women emotionally, and they can cause weight gain.

The Shot
Another form of birth control includes the birth control shot or Depo-Provera. Many women love the birth control shot because it is convenient. One shot lasts three months, and many women on the shot do not experience periods. On the down side, the shot has been known to cause infertility in women who stay on it for long periods of time, and it can cause depression, weight gain, and a change in sex drive.

Sterilization
Another form of contraception is sterilization: a tubal ligation for women or a vasectomy for men. This is a great option for married couples who know they do not want any more children or any children at all, for example. On the positive side, it is safe and convenient. On the negative side, however, it can be costly, and it is permanent, which may not be the best option for
everyone.

some side effects such as nausea and vomiting as well as bleeding in between periods.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)
Another option that may be available to you is the IUD. This is inserted by a physician, and it prevents pregnancy. IUDs are a great option because they are one of the most effective forms of birth control. Some women should not use the IUD, however. Advantages include effectiveness, affordability, and convenience. Disadvantages include irregular periods or heavier periods with worse cramps, mild pain when the IUD is inserted, and backache that lasts a few days.
