Home safety checklist room-by-room

Outdoor safety checklist

• Install and  use exterior door locks & add deadbolts.
• Roof inspection for loose shingles. Check rain gutters & downspouts for avoiding the buildup of unhealthy and damaging mold. 
• Local home security installation with surveillance camera and motion detectors.
• Gate has secure locks and needs no repair.
• Examine the shed, fences, awnings, decks, and pergola for avoiding hazards like dropping boards or tripping.
• Keep hazardous materials like paint, weed killer, pesticides, fertilizers, etc. locked. Secure the landscaping tools and lock trimmers, lawnmowers, etc.
• Prune trees and plants to avoid helping potential robbers hide. 
• Secure small entrances like pet doors and mail slots.

Hallway checklist

• Check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
• Secure the rugs.
• Add nightlights.

Living room & bedroom checklist

• Create an emergency escape plan and run drills. Be prepared for incidents like fire or earthquake, tornado, or flood.
• Check the switch plates & outlet covers.
• Invest in a fireproof safe.
• Inspect walls and repair the tears or holes.

Bathroom checklist

• Inspect the plumbing and fixtures.
• Check caulking around bathroom tiles, shower, and tub.
• Ensure that the shut-off valve is performing properly.
• Have the medicine cabinet kept locked and dispose of unused or expired medicines properly.
• Add non-slip mats to avoid slipping in the bath.

Kitchen checklist

• Inspect the appliances.
• Check the range hood.
• Wipe and vacuum all appliance vents and coils to avoid fire.
• Check water filters.
• Ensure circuits are not overloaded.
• Install safety latches to drawers & cupboards that hold knives and cleaners. 
• Equip the kitchen with a fire extinguisher.
