Last week, Smith expressed his excitement on Instagram over the fact that he was just seven days away from seeing his wife for the first time in months.

Australian batting core Steve Smith had to deal with a piece of heartbreaking news ahead of the second Boxing Day test against India. The former Australian captain has missed out again on his much-awaited reunion with his wife Dani Willis due to the latest coronavirus restrictions coming into play. Smith went to England with the Australian team on August 31 for the limited-over’s series and has been away from his wife ever since.

He had almost a two-month stay in the UAE for the Indian Premier League after the England series. Smith was the captain of the Rajasthan Royals in this year’s IPL. This was followed by quarantine in Australia before the series against India started. The right handed batsman is the only Australian player to have played all the games (3 ODIs, 3 T20Is and one Test) against India so far.

Heartbreak for Steve Smith
Steve Smith, who had been staying away from his wife for months, was waiting desperately for the reunion with her before the recent COVID-19 outbreak changed everything. Till recently, Cricket Australia used to allow partners to join players in the bubble after compulsory three-day quarantine. However, the recent outbreaks have forced the cricket board to change its rules.

As fallout of this, Smith and Willis will have to wait even longer to get together. Even though, Willis managed to land in Melbourne from Sydney before Victoria closed its borders to all residents of Greater Sydney, the change in rules means she will have to wait for a bit longer before reuniting with her husband.

Smith who last week, had taken to Instagram expressing his excitement over the fact that he was just seven days away from seeing his wife for the first time in months.

Smith will now be spending Christmas with his Test teammates as they prepare for the much anticipated Boxing Day Test. Australia will be hoping their star man to remain in good spirits and deliver with the bat after a rare failure in the first Test.
